Healthy Kids, Healthy Families®

At Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma (BCBSOK), we are committed to investing in programs that enrich the health, wellbeing and quality of life of Oklahoma kids and their families. We do this in a variety of ways, including volunteer activities, corporate support and direct program funding through grants.

In 2013, our employees worked side by side with Partners in Public Health and the Oklahoma City-County Health Department to build a KaBOOM! playground at the newly opened Northeast Regional Health and Wellness Campus in Oklahoma City. In one day, nearly 200 volunteers constructed a dream playground for the kids. The space is open to the public and offers local children and families a fun, safe and healthy place to play outside.

This year BCBSOK partnered with the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma to launch two anti-hunger pilot programs in the westernmost 55 counties in the state. Through a Healthy Kids, Healthy Families grant, the Regional Food Bank will expand its Fresh Food Mobile Pantry and Nutrition Education programs, providing families in high need areas of Oklahoma with consistent access to nutritious and fresh produce. The Fresh Food Mobile Pantries currently provide food to 600 families each month; our partnership will add five locations and serve an additional 1,100 families per month in central Oklahoma.

Also, BCBSOK’s support of the Nutrition Education program allowed the Regional Food Bank to hire a full-time AmeriCorps member to provide nutrition education, cooking demonstrations and guidance to improve the nutritional quality of pantry boxes that are distributed to thousands of hungry Oklahomans.
