By investing in our community, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma (BCBSOK) believes that we are creating an overall healthier environment, improving quality of life and leaving a healthy legacy for Oklahoma’s children.
In 2013, BCBSOK awarded grants to many nonprofit organizations that share a similar goal of improving Oklahoma’s health. Organizations include: Alzheimer’s Association, Child Abuse Network (CAN), LIFE Senior Services, Neighborhood Services Organization, Partners in Public Health, Inc. and YWCA of Oklahoma City.
The partnership with the Alzheimer’s Association is part of a unique statewide outreach to physicians to educate them about tools and resources available for Alzheimer’s patients and their caregivers. With financial help from BCBSOK, the Alzheimer’s Association was able to make monthly visits with more than 185 Oklahoma physicians in 2013. The effort also includes a partnership with the Oklahoma State Medical Association and the Oklahoma Osteopathic Association, which allows outreach to an even larger percentage of Oklahoma physicians.
BCBSOK also supports several organizations through the Healthy Kids, Healthy Families® initiative by partnering with nonprofit organizations that offer sustainable, measurable programs for children and families, focused on four key areas: nutrition, physical activity, disease prevention and management, and supporting safe environments. Key Healthy Kids, Healthy Families partners include KaBOOM!, the American Lung Association, Love is Respect, the Oklahoma Caring Foundation, and the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma.
Other grantees include: The Children’s Center, Girl Scouts of Eastern Oklahoma’s “Live Healthy, Lead Healthy” program, Global Gardens, Good Shepherd of Oklahoma, the Health Alliance for the Uninsured, Variety Foundation, and Youth Services of Oklahoma County.
Support for community events is targeted at those that raise awareness about health issues and garner funds for health causes that are benefiting the overall well-being of the community. In 2013, BCBSOK sponsored 75 community events that benefited initiatives ranging from community leadership to Alzheimer’s research. Other beneficiaries included the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Parent Child Center, Girl Scouts of Eastern Oklahoma and the Ronald McDonald House.
Several local organizations benefit from in-kind printing donations, including Fire Marshall Tom’s fire and safety programs, Family and Children’s Services Care Card and the Tulsa Area United Way.
Additionally, BCBSOK supported civic organizations throughout the state, including Leadership Oklahoma, Leadership Tulsa, the Greater Oklahoma City Chamber, the Oklahoma State University Foundation and the Tulsa Regional Chamber.
